Kern High School
The Kern High School District (KUSD), California’s largest 9-12 high school district, boasts over 37,000 students and 4,000 employees. Spanning 27 sites, KHSD hosts 22 megawatts of SunPower solar systems. Projected to save $80 million over 25 years, these savings will enhance extracurricular programs and upgrade facilities. SunPower has partnered with KHSD to bolster its commitment to STEM education through Project Lead the Way. Over the next 20 years, SunPower’s in-kind contributions are anticipated to broaden STEM curriculum across more schools and fortify existing programs within the district.
Porterville USD
SunPower’s collaboration with the Porterville Unified School District (PUSD) commenced with solar installations at five of its high schools. Witnessing the substantial savings, the district proceeded with additional installations, extending SunPower solar to 11 elementary and middle schools, along with its district office. Consequently, PUSD is now conserving over $1.2 million annually in energy costs, facilitating the launch of the Academy of Energy and Resource Occupations (AERO). This initiative furnishes students with a career-focused, technical learning environment.
San Benito High School
Many educational institutions grapple with escalating utility expenses, and San Benito High School was no exception. Seeking an economically viable and sustainable alternative, the school opted for solar power, installing three SunPower® Helix® carports totaling 665.5 kW. These systems effectively offset 88% of the school’s electricity consumption. Moreover, the carports not only shield against adverse weather conditions but also foster an ideal learning environment, enabled by the savings generated through solar energy.
In addition to showcasing solar technology to the next generation, SunPower offers distinct value to school districts through the SunPower Horizons Program. This comprehensive educational curriculum encompasses science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). At no extra expense to the district, students gain hands-on experience with renewable energy skills and careers.

Solar energy adoption in educational facilities has surged, with 5.5% of K-12 schools now powered by solar, a figure that has doubled in recent years according to the Solar Foundation. Solar energy not only slashes utility expenses but also frees up funds that schools can redirect towards supporting educators and enriching curricula. Take the Mount Diablo Unified School District in California, for instance, where SunPower rooftop panels and solar carports contribute to an estimated annual savings of $3 million on electricity. These savings fuel the district’s vibrant art program, enhancing its reputation.
SunPower Horizons® program provides STEM-based curriculum
While many districts appreciate the savings generated by their solar systems, we’ve received just as much acclaim for the enriching learning environment that on-site installations inspire. This recognition prompted us to establish the SunPower Horizons® Solar Education program. Designed to ignite students’ curiosity in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), the program concurrently advocates for clean, renewable energy. Educators are offered professional development opportunities to gain a comprehensive understanding of solar technology and the career prospects it offers. However, the curriculum extends beyond the classroom; interactive field trips and solar power projects enable students to cultivate work-ready skills through immersive alternative energy education. To date, over 30,300 students and more than 59 districts have embraced this hands-on educational opportunity.
SunPower donates to educational non-profits
Every so often, SunPower finds itself with an excess of solar panels. However, rather than letting them go to waste, we seize the opportunity to turn them into valuable learning tools. NC GreenPower is one such organization that has made excellent use of them. Their mission to install 5 kW solar photovoltaic (PV) systems in North Carolina schools across all 100 counties is swiftly becoming a reality. Presently, 34 schools and counting proudly host SunPower solar systems, serving as STEM-based teaching aids.
